Verb TO HAVE (Tener)
Present Tense
yo tengo nosotros tenemos
tú tienes ustedes tienen
él/ella tiene ellos tienen
Yo tengo un iPad. (I have an iPad.)
Past Tense

An simple way to remember how to use this tense is to remember that it basically means: used to. This tense also gives the idea that the state of being or the action has not fully finished as you talk about it. Furthermore, this tense may also be used to show that something happened in the past at the same time that something else was happening.

When do we use the verb TENER?
- to show possession: Yo tengo un libro interesante. (I have an interesting book.)
- to say your age: Yo tengo 15 años. (I am 15 years old.) In Spanish we don't use the verb (To be) to say our age.
- to express basic human needs: Yo tengo hambre. (I am hungry.) Yo tengo sed. (I am thirsty.) Yo tengo sueño. (I am sleepy.)
- to express that you have to do something: Yo tengo que estudiar. (I have to study.) Yo tengo que dormir. (I have to sleep. Yo tengo que comer. (I have to eat.) The basic structure to express that you need to do something is the following: verb TENER + que + verb in infinitive (ends is -ar, -er, or ir). Example: Yo tengo + que + caminar. (I have to walk)
